YOUNGSTOWN — As the Youngstown State University administration and the faculties union failed to reach an agreement at their last bargaining meeting, the university and its union of classified employees tentatively agreed Friday night on a new three-year contract. The YSU administration announced late Friday that it had reached an interim agreement with thought workers represented by the Association of Classified Employees. If the strike vote passes and no agreement is reached, YSU-OAS will be on strike on Monday, the first day of the autumn break at YSU. The board will vote on the interim agreement next week. The University is asking the faculties union to continue negotiations as soon as possible — and to submit a counter-proposal to the university`s latest offer, in the hope of reaching an agreement on a new three-year contract. “Nor is their continued attempt to fragment the faculty`s ability to have a significant say in the functioning of its programs, departments and classes, as they have clearly demonstrated with their hasty reorganization of academic units this summer. The fact that they continue to insist on a contractual language that removes the protection of the faculty as a “sensitive point”, while they are demanding interim agreements with other unions that have not yet been reached, is more likely to harm the unions than by negotiating,” concluded Mr. Vopat. On Monday, YSU-ACE held a ratification meeting and opened the vote on an interim agreement that took place immediately afterwards. Voting closed on Tuesday, March 6 at 4 p.m. .m, and ballots were counted immediately after. The preliminary agreement with the YSU Association for Classified Employees is now subject to formal ratification prior to membership of the ACE and the YSU Foundation Board. The pact calls for much the same economic conditions that are presented and rejected today to the faculty union, which has filed a strike notice starting on Monday. The interim agreement was successful in protecting the days off that the administration tried to eliminate, and also established a buy-back program for unused leave. However, wages still leave much to be desired, as starting wages remain below market value. Bryson Stemock of Hubbard, Ohio, focused on mathematics and physics and astronomy; Marie Francis of Hubbard, Ohio, focused on respiratory care, and Dana Pagley of Hubbard, Ohio, focused on construction engineering, are current student collaborators on campus and have been nominated by members of the YSU Association of Classified Employees.
